Get to know Pilates ITC Director and Educator, Suzanne Newby.

The other half of the dynamic Director team delivering Pilates ITC Courses and Pathways in Australia today. Suzanne is a Pilates Practitioner (91490NSW) and co-Director of Pilates Fitness Institute (PFI) in Perth. She has over 10 years of combined industry and education experience and works hard to elevate the standard of education and grow a positive culture around lifelong learning in the Pilates industry.

Suzanne is particularly excited by holistic biomechanical movement and has been strongly influenced by Karen Clippinger. She is also mentored by Sally Anderson, has presented at the PAA Conference, and delivers Continuing Education around Australia. She too has served on the board of the industry’s peak body, Pilates Alliance Australasia (PAA).

I remember my first session: my body instantly loved the repertoire.

1. If you had to choose only one apparatus, what would it be and why?

That’s like asking me to pick a favourite child! If I have to choose just one, it’s the Cadillac. On good or bad days, it always gives back.

I love the ease with which it can be adapted to challenge or support and soothe. It also suits my body type! Being long-limbed and flexible I enjoy the traction work and ranges it provides for the joints. Plus the inverted and support integration repertoire really puts me to task!

2. What is your top teaching tip?

Presence. Take the time to listen. Step back. Observe the Client or group in front of you before rattling off a bunch of cues that might not be right for the person or moment!

3. When did you know you had found your calling with Pilates?

At my fist Pilates class, it was love at first sight or session, rather. I performed on stage for most of my youth and taught movement/fitness in my early adult years, but nothing resonated or clicked – in my teaching life or as a mover – like Pilates. I remember my first session: my body instantly loved the repertoire. I was like a duck to water and it gave back so much mentally and physically that I never looked back and I immersed myself in the Method. Every day since has been a good one with Pilates in it.
